Why should you lose weight?

There are many reasons why people want to lose weight, some people just want that perfect figure and some people want to lose weight for health reasons. Most of us just want to look good, and that's not a bad thing really. Looking good and feeling good is a boost for our self confidence and self esteem . Losing weight for health reasons is also another motivating factor, people who are really over weight are at risk from serious health complaints, such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes. What ever your reason for losing weight the benefits of being fit and healthy are a positive thing.

The dangers of obesity

There are numerous health problems associated with obesity, people who are obese are more likely to suffer with heart disease, heart disease is one of the biggest killers in modern society to day, and this is down to our life style and what we eat. Diabetes, strokes, high blood pressure and certain types of cancers are also attributed to bad diet and unhealthy life styles.

Time to get fit

Exercise is going to be the most important part of your weight loss program, if your not going to exercise you not going to lose that weight. Diets and slimming pills are not the be all and end of of losing weight, you HAVE to exercise to lose weight. Don't bother with exercise DVD's there a waste of money the only thing your going to lose is the money out of your pocket. Fancy abdominal trainers are also another waste of money, 90% of them are useless, you will use it for a short while and it will end up gathering dust in the garage.

Aerobic Exercise

Aerobic exercise is any repetitive activity that works the heart and lungs - this usually involves the large muscles in your legs, backside, chest and back.

The word aerobic literally means 'with air', as during exercise your body needs to take in extra oxygen. Aerobic exercise is activity that makes you breathless but can be sustained for prolonged periods. It helps develop your heart, lungs and blood vessels, making them more efficient in delivering oxygen around your body.

Examples of aerobic exercise are:

  • Swimming ..swimming is another good form of exercise, swimming exercises all the major muscle groups and its easy on the joints as well.

  • Walking.. Start walking this is one of the best exercise you can do, walk briskly for about 30minutes a day, longer if you want. Any body can walk, you don't need any fancy equipment and its totally free

  • Running ..If you are really unfit or really heavy don't start running it could do you more harm than good, start by doing a bit of walking to build your strength and stamina up first.

  • Cycling..Cycling is another excellent form of exercise, again any one can do it, the only snag is that you need to own a bicycle. Cycling is a good fat burning exercise, it is pretty easy on the joints.

Endurance running is particular good for developing aerobic capacity since you begin to form more small blood vessels which increase oxygen transport to the muscles and create greater efficiency in the heart and lungs. The greater your aerobic capacity the longer you can delay the onset of lactic acid.

Until recently, experts have recommended that adults exercise for about 30 minutes each day. Most people have taken this to mean 30 minutes of continuous exercise, but some studies suggest that three 10-minute sessions could provide similar health and psychological benefits. However, people who opt for shorter exercise bursts should make sure that their workout is sufficiently long to increase the heart rate.

Anaerobic Exercise

Examples of anaerobic exercise are sprinting, weightlifting, push ups and pull ups. Anaerobic exercise will not burn off fat as the body needs oxygen to be able to do this - it will help to build stronger muscles though.

Where aerobic exercise is steady exercise over a long period, anaerobic exercise is that which takes place in short, intense bursts.

When you push your body to the point where your lungs are no longer capable of supplying sufficient amounts of oxygen to the muscles you are exercising anaerobically. You then rely on the body's limited capacity to perform without oxygen. This is why anaerobic exercise is only possible for short bursts while the muscle is working at a very high intensity

An example of anaerobic exercise is:

  • Weight-training. Weight training will help tone up those flabby areas, if you are new to weight-training then my advice is to join a gym and get a bit of coaching of one of the instructors, they will only be to happy to advise you. You can do your self serious injury weight-training if its not done properly.

Anaerobic exercise will not burn off fat as the body needs oxygen to be able to do this, however it will help to build stronger muscles. It also speeds up your metabolic rate so that you continue to burn fat after exercise.

Diets..Eat More

Eat more, yes that's right eat more, but eat more of the right food. Let me explain, if you eat more your bodies metabolism will speed up, and the effect of this without going in to a long, boring explanation is that you will start to loose weight, believe me this is a well proven fact. The trick is to eat the right type of food, the foods to avoid are bread, potatoes, pasta and any other starchy food. This type of food is packed with carbohydrates and will pile the pounds on if you don't burn them off..Don't cut out carbohydrates all together, because this is your body's energy source, just cut down on them. There are plenty of diets available choose one you think you can stick to. Other foods to avoid are the obvious, sweets chocolates and high fat junk food. Eat at the right time, have your meals at the same time every day. Don't eat after seven o'clock in the evening, why ? Because your metabolism slows down at night and what you eat will be stored by your body. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, fish chicken and lean meat.Drink plenty of water, at least two liters per day, this will help with any water retention problems. The benefits of drinking water are endless, it is good for every part of the body.
